The paper demonstrates the potential applications of optical emission spectroscopy. A dielectric barrier discharge is used as the excitation source. It is implemented on a ‘Partsko’ experimental device with a mica plate (frequency 1–50 kHz, voltage on electrodes 3–5 kV) for diagnostics and monitoring of pollutants, in particular metals, in natural water bodies. This physico-chemical method is innovative and promising for identifying and analysing sources of metal contamination in wastewater from industrial enterprises, agricultural organisations, domestic facilities, and transport infrastructure.
