The quality of life of the population is the most important priority for assessing the effectiveness of the state’s socio-economic policy. As an economic category, it is a complex characteristic that reflects not only the level of material well-being, but also the degree of development of the economic sphere. Although the existing methods have great scientific value in the theoretical and practical direction in the field of assessing the quality of life of the population, many methods do not sufficiently substantiate approaches to the formation of structural elements of the quality of life of the population, a system of indicators for its assessment. The quality of life is formed under the influence of many factors, which can be divided into economic, social and institutional. In the study of the quality of life of the population, it is necessary to distinguish the dichotomy of objective and subjective methods of its assessment. The study of the quality of life should include the study of both objective conditions and processes of life, and the subjective opinion of people. The concept of «quality of life» in Russian scientific discourse is extremely polysemic in terms of semantic interpretation, its content is debatable, as well as the ways of operationalization through a system of indicators and criteria. The purpose of the study was to emphasize the relevance of the subjectivist approach with an emphasis on the subjectivity of an individual in a situation of economic instability and the influence of external factors on it. The empirical base is the data of a standardized sociological survey based on the program and the author’s tools. The starting point of our study was the quantitative indicators of the quality of life of the population of the Yaroslavl region. The main hypothesis was the assumption that modern statistical indicators of the economic situation, demonstrating an improvement in the quality of life of the region’s population, do not actually reflect reality, which creates difficulties in matters of state regulation
